The Security Operations Department manages visitor safety, security systems, asset protection at the Museum's properties. The Museum's physical security program includes a staff of over 100 contract security staff, state of the art access control, video management, and visitor management systems, and a 24/7 Security Operations Center. The Department also supports the Museum's dynamic events program.

The Director of Security is a senior management position within the Operations Department responsible for ensuring the protection of the Museum's physical assets and safety of its staff and visitors. The Director provides day-to-day oversight of the Museum's physical security operations including its security systems, personnel, contract security, and security vendors. The position also facilitates security services provided in support of the Museum's programmatic offerings and venue activities, supervises the Security Operations Center (SOC) and front desk functions, and ensures consistent enforcement of security policy and protocol. A key member of the risk management function at the Museum, the position administers elements of the Museum's emergency preparedness and response program, and leads security related training and activities for SFMOMA employees. The position also supports the Museum's offsite locations, as required.
