The General Counsel serves as legal counsel to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.  This role negotiates, prepares, and reviews complex contracts and legal memoranda; identifies and analyzes legal issues affecting the Museum's operations and programs; advises on litigation matters; advises on the development and revision of institutional policies; advises the Board of Trustees on matters related to governance; and analyses a broad range of federal, state, and local laws/regulations that affect the Museum's operations, collections, exhibitions, programs, staffing, fundraising, and capital projects.

The legal internship is designed to help a law student further develop the legal skills needed for practice in the private or public/non-profit sector.

Under the close supervision of the General Counsel, the intern will be responsible for:

  • Drafting legal memoranda and contracts, conducting legal research, attending client meetings and other applicable hearings/court matters.
  • Attending regular classes/presentations at the Museum to further their understanding of museum careers.

Project(s) will be based upon pressing legal issues during the internship period, which could include research and analysis, contract drafts, review and revisions, compliance requirements regarding museum operations, etc.
